Hi this can be done with some device that will detect motion like a camera on the RPi or a motion sensor.
For the pictures, you can use a screensaver that cycles through a folder with files.
I see it’s been a while since you’ve posted, but I’m curious—did anyone try integrating a small ESPHome PIR sensor with a display like the Waveshare e-ink or even an old tablet running Fully Kiosk? I’m wondering how responsive the sensor is in waking the screen in real use. Would love to hear how folks are powering theirs over time too—battery or wired?
Why would you make it motion activated while uring a Waveshare e-ink? The benefit of eink is that it’s image remains visible while powered off…
I am using a simple tablet with fully kiok that can be configured to wake up when someone is in front of it…
I used a similar setup but ran into trouble powering the screen reliably. I ended up switching to a nixplay.com frame since it handles everything over Wi-Fi, and I trigger it using a Zigbee motion sensor through Home Assistant. I set it to sleep when there’s no motion and wake when someone walks by. No more dealing with HDMI glitches or custom power stuff—works great with minimal fuss.
