Mousetrap Sensor

I used over the counter mousetraps with Sonoff zigbee door / window sensor (SNZB-04) to make a smart mousetrap. I use the sensor to trigger an automation to send a notification and the initiate a light automation. This is not the first mousetrap HA project, but it’s a very simple take on the whole smart mousetrap.

PARTS LIST:

  • d-Con Ultra Set Covered Snap Trap.
  • Sonoff Zigbee door / window sensor (SNZB-04)
  • 8×3mm Neodymium magnets
  • Glue Gun
  • 3D Printer (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Apply two 8 x 3mm magnets onto the pull lever

  2. Apply hot glue to magnets to set in place. I only wrapped the glue around the magnets in one direction to avoid interfering with the cover.

  3. Add sensor to your HA instance. I set up the sensor first so that I could verify alignment when applying the sensor to the cover.

  4. Set the mousetrap.

  5. Apply door sensor with double sticky tape, ensuring the sensor reads closed before you set it into final position. The Neodymium magnets give you a larger window for alignment over the really weak magnet from Sonoff. My second revision uses a 3D printed mount for better adhesion.
