Moving datadisk to SSD on Synology VM

Any one have an idea on how to successfully move the HA datadisk to an external SSD running in a Synology VM? I’m running HAos on a DS218+ VM. My Synology has 2 4tb ironwolf NAS hdds, which slows down HA startups, etc. Synology doesn’t allow you to run a VM on an external drive. So I’m attempting to get around this by moving the datadisk to an external SSD. I attached a 240gb SATA SSD to the Synology Usb port and mapped it to the VM. I can see the SSD in HA supervisor listed as “sdb” and “sdb1” (not sure why there are two partitions). However, when I attempt to “move the datadisk” to the SSD, Supervisor doesn’t recognize the external drive. I tried manually via the CLI as well to no avail. Running “os datadisk list” also doesn’t show external SSD, and when I enter “os datadisk mov /dev/sdb” I get an error saying my ssd isn’t a drive. I’v tried reformatting the SSD to exFAT, EXT4, and FAT32 with identical results. Any ideas? The inability to use an SSD in Synology VM is what is keeping me from migrating away from my RPI4.

USB drive wont work. If im not mistaken that Synology unit has a esata port on the back. Not sure if it has to be a proprietary synology external enclosure or if it will work with any esata enclosure. Connecting a drive to that port will expand the internal storage to that port. Could try something similar to this…

Unfortunately, the only way to expand the volume to the esata is by purchasing the Synology expansion unit. I have an external disk connected to the esata now (for local backups) and it only shows up as a shared folder - identical to a drive connected via usb
