Since we’re moving from the US to Europe, we won’t be able to take our pi, zwave, smart plugs, vlans, RTL433, etc. I read on this forum that it’s best not to leave this for new homeowners. So my question is: where do I post these items for sale? Is ebay my only option?
I plan to leave the ‘stuff’ wired in, reset and READY to add to a brand new HA install. ZWave wall switches are perfect with or without ZWave. They still work. I just won’t ever hand over a built HA box and network - for the same reasons you read. You can absolutely bring. Your pi with you and rebuild your setup whenyoh get across the pond.
I have several z-wave motion detectors, window sensors and my garage door opener with a rely. These would be useless to a new owner without a hub and home automation. I also have my network set up with several VLAN’s. this includes wiring and ports set up for the various VLAN’s. Should I sell all my network hardware and let the new owner try to figure out where all the network cables run to?
Leave the ZWave stuff. Leave the ZWave stick. Put it in a box with a new blank mini PC READY to run HA. Do NOT leave your HA box. (that’s the problematic part.)
Feel free to leave as much network gear as you want (don’t leave any of your user id’s.)
The issue is passing id’s to the new homeowner.
You simply can’t get all your stuff off the install nor can they inherit it in a completely secure fashion. Explain it to the that way.
To new homeowner:
Hey here’s a new box and all this stuff is smart home ready but because I value yojr security I cannot hand over a fully configured system. Here’s my docs on how it works. You just got extra stuff that you didn’t expect. Hurrah!
Can you post a link to this? I don’t plan to move, but i’m curious what is compromising.
I would reset all my network devices to factory default and enter one new admin password (and pass it to a new owner). Regarding smart house: what - beside users, passwords … is a security risk? I mean - if you remove all your devices (like phones etc), remove all users, passwords … and leave just one admin with all HA stuff running?
Many devices can have custom firmwares today, which will not be affected by a reset.
You might flash an original firmware, but just having the option to flash a custom firmware will make the device risky, especially to a new owner that do not have that knowledge.
In some areas you might also be responsible for the stuff you leave for the next owner.
It’s not clear if you mean you think it will all be incompatible or you just physically have to leave it behind. Pi’s and RTL433 can be used in Europe.
And also most things on batteries.
There might be other limitations, like thread on TRVs, but that is not really related to region, but more to brand and designs.
There are some things that might be an issue, which might not be thought of, like Z-Wave using 900Mhz in some areas in the world and 800Mhz in Europe.
@spiro it’s a combination - I know the zwave can’t be used in Europe and most of the zwave stuff I have a new homeowner couldn’t use (I have only two switches). Taking the Pi and RL433 will be easy but I will be limited on weight, etc. on what I can take with me. I have a lot of money invested in the vlans and other zwave and was hoping to sell it for a few bucks. I just can’t see the average homeowner knowing what to do with a vlan or zwave setup.
