Moving Home Assistant to SSD on RasPi

Good morning all,

One of the things on my to do list almost since I started using Home Assistant about 4 years ago is to move it from the SD card on my Raspberry Pi to an external SSD. I have seen several instructions on how to do this and understand them completely, but they all start with a fresh OS install and then restoring from a backup.

Will it work if I just image the current SD card and then flash it to the SSD?

Is there anything I need to be aware of before trying this?

My Current Setup:

  • Running Home Assistant Operating System (v12.1) on a Raspberry Pi 4
  • Home Assistant Core v 2024.4.2
  • Home Assistant Supervisor 2024.04.0
  • Zigbee via ZHA using the Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus
  • Z-Wave through ZHA using the Zooz 800 Series Long Range USB Controller

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

I would go with the recommended “fresh install / restore backup” because that will test/show if your backup is good for a restore if needed.
