Am thinking of going to Linux for my HA setup. Currently on a pi and getting used to. Are there any suggestions regarding this and all? Is it better to be in Linux at core, within a VM or Docker, or what?

If you have the option then definitely go the docker route. Once you get it set up its really easy to maintain it. And once you figure out volume mounts then the set up is a cinch as well.
