My Pi died, I got new hardware now z-wave won't connect to my devices

I am now running hass.io (latest release). I did a factory reset on my Aotec Z-stick Gen5.

Home assistant sees the Z-stick, but I can’t seem to pair anything else.
I’ve done factory resets on several GE switches and fan controllers, and still nothing.

I did a factory reset to my Schlage deadbolt, then attempted to add it “securely” using a new network key, but no love there either.

Any tips, tricks, advice? I really don’t want to re-purchase each device.

Not that it matters now but why did you need to do a reset on all of your z wave devices from just moving your config to a new device?

But on to the issue at hand…how did you try to add them? thru the HA interface or with the stick itself?

If you have a backup of your previous config’s - especially the zwcfg…xml file from your previous install, things should pretty much just work. If you were using secure zwave, then you will also need your zwave network key.

  1. I wanted to start out all fresh and clean. My previous installation had many adds/ removes in the Z-wave network and many nodes were missing. I know that in the great big scheme of things, that it doesn’t matter at all what node number a device receives, but I figured that since I had to reinstall everything anyway, I might as well begin anew. I think this is where I truly messed up.
  2. I am adding them through HA Interface.

I cross-posted this issue to Reddit and learned that I had to exclude the devices, and then I would be able to add them to my new Z-wave network.

I do have one Schlage Smart Lock that was added securely. I have the previous network key, is it acceptable to just re-use it when I need to exclude the lock? I was thinking that a new network key would be necessary as I had to change the supporting hardware, and was guessing that the network key was aligned with the hardware it was generated upon.

I didn’t think you could exclude something from the z wave network i you had already factory reset either controller or device since at that point by default one of the devices won’t know it’s connected to the other.

Have you tried to exclude any of the devices from your factory defaulted z stick yet and actually been successful?

if you have the Aeotec Z stick gen 5, you can use it to perform and exclude on any device regardless if that device was previously or currently connected to the z wave controller. the exclude command is a global command and the device will listen to that command from any controller.

Put the z wave controller in exclude mode, then press the learn/program button on the device. if successful, the Aeotec z wave controller will blink a series of colors (don’t remember the color or sequence) indicating the device has been excluded from all z wave networks.

Then pair the device as normal.

That’s good to know. Thanks!

But that leads to a follow up question…

If both devices are factory reset then neither device are paired to each other (or anything else) so why would the device need to be excluded before pairing if the device doesn’t think it’s currently paired?

I’ve factory defaulted a few devices in my time and after I do that I’ve never needed to then exclude the device before (re)pairing it to the controller.

This is exactly what I have, and what I’m in the middle of doing (darn work getting in the way!)
I too, had no idea that the Exclude function was global, and would work even on devices that are not in my config. In the Reddit thread, /u/nobody2000 put it this way: “You can take your RPi with your Z-stick to a friend’s home and as long as you have physical access to a device, you can exclude it. Then your “friend” will have to re-add it to his network again.” (or words to that effect). I don’t know about you, but if a “friend” did this to my Z-wave network, they would no longer be a friend.

Some z wave devices may issue an exclude command to itself when you do a factory reset. I’m not sure though and it depends on the device manufacturer.

I’ve had a few switches although they were brand new from the manufacturer in a sealed box, I still had to do an exclude before include otherwise they would not add to the network. I don’t know why and there’s no “factory reset” on those switches, but an exclude fixed the pairing issue.
