In my opinion, this is not a solution because I personally think, and probably when I finally have time, I will confirm that the OS upgrade will not work again…
If an OS install ends with the old OS then it means it tried to install, had problems booting the OS and switched back to the partition that did work. The logs should be able to give you a clue what went wrong booting the newer release.
When you do a fresh install and restore a backup it is a very different process than an upgrade. So it will probably not fail the same way the upgrade does.
