My Snips Housing (What's your IOT Housing?)

Helllo all,

I thought I might want to share my latest project. I am running Home Assistant for a long time now and it thought it was time to build a nice housing for my Snips Voice Control.

Herefore I took a raim pipe and put a Sony BT speaker iand Raspberry Pi 3 inside .

The design is… let’s say SPECIAL . But so far I really like it. I’ll update the post once the hounsing is complete. But maybe some of you also wannt to share their housings for their IOT stuff.

It is still prototype but i’ll go for this design. It just has to be finished.

Here you go:

It’s got character. Especially the insect-like antennae protruding from its head.

That shape reminded me of another source of raw material for a housing: white PVC drain pipe, specifically a 45° elbow.

There are other elbows and T’s available to make the housing’s shape truly unique.

It is indeed rain pipe  But metal one. Thanks for your feedback. And yeah… it’s kinda insect like … now I see it too :stuck_out_tongue: Thanks for the link… will check this also

I made A Logo For my Housing. What do you think about this?

P.S. I hope I don’t break any copyrights here?

Logo%20Test

Very nice but I’m not the person to ask about copyright issues.

Love it, very funky. Google or Amazon will be calling.

PS most open source projects are happy to have their names and logos used in good faith. In other words don’t sell your device saying “this is an official home assistant product”. Putting a logo on your home designed and used (as opposed to sold) device will not usually be a problem.

Having said that, I do not speak for the project, but I do understand some intellectual property law as I am a lawyer, but not a specialist.

Thanks for the feedback. I will post new Pictures as soon as I finished my project. I hope it will inspire some guys for some new projects.

You said it contains a Sony Bluetooth speaker and an RPi. What kind of microphone does it have?

Respeaker… but i stopped the project. It was ugly at the end … searching now a new case …

Can I ask which respeaker and how you found it’s performance, and of snips in general?

I would be interested in that as well. I tried a setup with Respeaker 4-Mic Hat and it didn’t understand me when I was more than 2 meters away. When I was playing music it didn’t understand me at all.

I use the reaspeaker v2 and snips and I don’t have any issues.i don’t use the head . Watch that your mic is not distracted in a housing for the moment my reaspeaker is not built-in .I abondend the project as I became ugly bit I’ll search a new hoising

Thanks for the info, I just got a respeaker Mic-Array-v2-0 on a local buy/sell site. I will probably end up with a truly awful housing, but that is typical of my projects

Wife acceptance is very important if you automate your whole house …:joy:

Did you put your reaspeaker in a case?

No. Put it on a RPI3 which was sitting on a desk. I always wondered if I did something incredibly wrong. I read articles where someone uses the 2-mic hat and complains it hears him from another room

well my reaspeakers hear me in the whole house but my house isn’t that big. but if i speak a bit louder than alos in the garden. A goooood mic is the most important … the rest is just setting up the good intents / sentences

I tried many times to approach snips but without success. I think it has a good potential but a very confusing documentation.

Can you suggest me some noob guide for starting from scratch? Consider that my idea would be running Snips server into a docker container (no more officially supported and poorly documented) and then create some snips satellites around the house. Why? Well remove gh minis and finally says " HEY JARVIS"!

I am still trying to think of a suitable name for my proposed snips instance. HAL seems doomed to disobedience. Jeeves is too twee. Hey snips will be hard to explain to visitors. Mammy is just, well, not acceptable any more.

Perhaps I should concentrate on just getting the thing working first

Poor misunderstood HAL.

He was just doing his job, withholding the mission’s true purpose from being (prematurely) revealed to the crew.

He can be faulted for being too thorough about it.
