Need advice for media center in HA

I want some videos to play when I activate certain scenes. I need some storage capability because the videos may weigth more than 100gb in total. Any suggestion will be appreciated.

I have a samsung tv and I can cast files directly to the tv, I’ve been able to cast some images from the www folder in HA but nothing more… tried with a video and it didn’t work

another thing to mention, all those videos I want to store come from Youtube, so maybe there’s a easier solution to this… tried media_extractor with no luck, not sure how it works either…

any ideas will be much appreciated

sorry bad news HA not built for doing that

U could get a pi and put PLEX on it and then use HA for drive it.

but have look into the picture-elements that can show images file that are in the www folder

you mean that if I put PLEX on a pi I could cast videos to my tv with some command? I’d like to run videos within an automation.

what do you mean by: “but have look into the picture-elements that can show images file that are in the www folder”

I want to cast videos, not images

Checked out on PLEX a little bit and looks promising, many thanks!

Or LibreELEC on a RPi since PLEX does more then necessary, no?

looks really interesting too, ty

I guess Kodi would do the trick as well

LibreELEC = OS & Kodi for RPi (and other single board systems too)

I would like to play a playlist of videos from an automation, not just a single video. would that be possible with libreELEC? I guess it would looking at the documentation.

Did you see this: https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/kodi/

I tried Plex and it’s working great, is there any way to efficiently install either a Kodi or Plex server in the same Raspberry as HA?

if not, what raspberry should I buy to run a Plex server? could I store all the videos in the SD card itself or should I use and external hdd for such purpose?

many thanks

I reply myself, been googling and found the Plex Media Server add-on for hassio, I believe it might work

EDIT: nope, it’s not recommended for a Pi…

EDIT: I reply myself, better not use and SD card…

Just in case it helps someone, I ended up using an Asus router as media server. From there I can cast videos to my samsung TV in automations using the cast url service from

With that server you can as well easily acces all your content through the very same TV UI
