Need help adding/pairing Schlage Camelot smart lock to home assistant via Zwave

I have seen many threads with this same exact question, and watched a handful of youtube videos. I can’t seem to get this working and it’s very overwhelming. All I want to do is be able to control this lock remotely and it turns out there are 9,000 steps to do this. I am about to return this lock and throw the rest of this crap away if I can’t get it working shortly. Please help. Here is what I have:

Lock: SCHLAGE Home Keypad Lever With Camelot Trim & Z-Wave Technology

Raspberry Pi 4 with Home Assistant installed, seems to be running fine.
Zooz 700 Series Z-wave plus S2 usb stick

This lock did not come with ANY instructions in the manual regarding pairing it to zwave. It only says the programming code and instructions how to physically mount it on the door. NOTHING on how to pair it, etc. I went to Schlage’s site and they only tell you how to pair it with apple’s thing, smart things, etc. NOT home assistant. So I don’t even know if I’m doing the pairing process right.

I go to configuration, integrations, z-wave js configure, add device. In many of the videos people have an “add node” button. That button does not exist for me. Only “devices, entities, add device, remove device, heal network, and re-configure server”. So I click “Add device”.

This brings up “Add a Z-wave device” and the wheel spins. I click the schlage front button and type the program code. It blinks and holds red for maybe 30 seconds or so beeps twice, then turns off. The home assistant spinny wheel simply times out. That’s it.

I read stuff about a network key, about not using the old deprecated zwave thing but to use JS. I read the lock has to be close. It’s basically sitting on top of my PI. I had no idea it was going to be this incredibly complicated, this seems ridiculous to me for a simple remote unlock/lock feature, which is all I want. What gives?

Please explain to me how to pair this like I’m 5 years old. I have zero experience with HA, don’t know what hassio that people mention is, don’t know any acronyms, I don’t know anything. I have followed the steps from numerous videos and posts and am not able to get it paired. Please help. Thank you.

First need the EXACT model number of your lock. There are a couple unique procedures for schlage locks. We also need to determine if your lock uses S0 pairing (older models) or S2 (new)

Thanks. It’s FE599.

So after a few hours, I stumbled on this post from the hubitat community from Randy:

"Follow this sequence EXACTLY.

Mount the lock on the door.
Move the hub VERY close to the lock.
Remove one battery.
Hold the Schlage button in and replace battery.
Lock will blink twice.
Enter a factory lock code.
Lock will reset.

Put hub in exclude mode.
Enter lock programming code.
Press Schlage button.
Press 0.

Put hub in Z-wave discovery mode.
Enter lock programming code.
Press Schlage button.
Press 0.

Lock should pair.
If not redo exclusion and discovery."

This sequence worked for me. Not sure how we were supposed to figure that out, no instructions from Schlage or helpful info that I could see. But I got it paired.

So now, I see on the overview “LOCK Connected Keypad with Lever” and there’s a Lock and Unlock option. Is there a way to get more functionality? Change codes from the phone or PC? Is there a way to have a certain code only work during business hours (9-5)?

Basically I want my code to work 24/7 and a “client code” to only open from 9-5. Is this possible? Thanks.

I got it all working after a few days of plugging away at it. The main thing was getting that above sequence that Schlage made so difficult to find. Not sure why that sequence wasn’t on the instruction sheet with the lock but oh well.

I used Keymaster for the dates/times for lock access, and Tailscale for remote connectivity. I am very happy with the functionality. I hope that it remains rock solid “reliability-wise” and I’ll be a happy camper. This thread can be closed if need be. Thanks.

Hey, John, if you can go back and flag that response that solved your problem, that will mark this thread as resolved. Thanks!

This finally got my lock paired. The only thing I changed (maybe due to a different year/model) was having to extend the bolt first, then push the schlage button, then enter the code, then press 0. Did that after excluding, and then after including and it finally worked.

I guess the “X” when you try to include is saying it’s already included in another hub.
