Need help with tablet charging

I for the life of me cannot get this tablet to charge.

It’s a Surface 3, the very early version of the surface family with micro USB.

I’ve tried a few 12v to 5v step downs, the latest being rated at 5v @ 10A.

Still the tablet says, plugged in but does not charge.
If I use a AC adapter rated at 5v @ 3A, everything is fine so is it something to do with the DC?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Where did you get your USB cable? You might be using a data only cable vice a power cable.

AC adapter is AC wall voltage input to 5v 3a DC output.

Have you measured the voltage the dc/dc converter is outputting with a multimeter?

Man I haven’t seen that in a while. Completely forgot the early surfaces had that micro jack.

I know for a fact there is circuitry in the dock to handle power delivery for those two jacks and provide additional power through the USB A port just beneath that.

It also tends to lend credit to the idea that power delivery on that micro jack is more like a Qualcomm fast charger and needs to negotiate power requirements before it opens the spigot.

I suspect you will either need a good quality USB power supply cable or else replicate what it’s doing when you plug in.

Dumb question-do you have anything that charges it for certain?

I have had laptops and tablets where when they are plugged in, they say plugged in and even charging, but they never actually charge. Seconds after they are unplugged they come up and say battery low and shut off.

My only solution was to replace the batteries in instances where I could.

Yea nah if I use a AC wall charger, it’s mint. Charges, holds charge fine.

I’m banging head against a wall here, I’ve mounted this tablet 5 times thinking it’s going to work.

No go

I’m actually using a custom soldered microUSB which is only power, so I know it’s definitely not that.

Here’s an update.

I’ve left it overnight a d it’s fully charged.

However, it doesn’t seem to like being plugged in and running off the charger.

It doesn’t say charging when it’s running so it just goes flat again.

I’m about to punch myself and give up.
