If I were to purchase a nest hello doorbell and paid the monthly fee would I be able to integrate the facial recognition aspect into HA?
Not currently. Nest does not open that up to their API.
So my best option would be a security camera and third party recognition software?
I’m disabled. I have friends and family coming all the time. I live in a suburban apartment complex. I have an August door lock. I’m looking to setup a camera to see someone and if it knows them say ”Ryan is here. Would you like to unlock the door?" similar to a Hello. Is any of this even doable?
Except for the fact that OP is asking about facial recognition, which Doorbird doesn’t have…
At CES they announced incoming facial recognition feature, and it has open API, so it gives plenty of possibilities.
Read a post on another site where someone used tasker to read the notifications it receives on the phone. If the notification comes from Nest and says “Jane is at the front door”, he’d use tasker to then start up an automation. In his case, he unlocked his smart door lock. I don’t love the solution since it’s dependent on a mobile phone, but if it’s the only option it’s better than nothing. For me, I’m thinking about adding a wall tablet alarm panel and can make that be the station that receives and reads the notifications and kicks off the automation trigger, since it’s stationary and would always be plugged in. He was using SmartThings though and the delay was about 3 seconds. Hoping that with HA it might be more instant since it runs locally.
