Network status as automation condition

My HA host computer uses ethernet, and connects to my home network by a five port switch.

Every so often, every couple of months, the switch loses its mind, and devices connected to the switch find themselves no longer connected.

A simple power cycle of the switch fixes it (and quells the panic in me that the HA host computer may have failed!)

It occurs to me that my Zigbee devices will work even without a working TCP/IP connection. So I could add a Zigbee power switch to the network switch and write an automation that tests for a working network connection (ping the router, maybe) and toggle the Zigbee power switch.

Only problem is, I don’t know what to test in the automation.

Any ideas gratefully accepted.

you’ve seen the ping integration?

create a sensor that pings an ip address of your choosing…

No, I didn’t know that existed. I kinda assumed it was already built in and I just couldn’t find it.

MANY thanks, that’s exactly what I was looking for.
