opened my HA Blue today. upgraded supervisor and that worked fine. then updated OS from 5.13 to 7.0. it’s has been about 5 hours and the box is still not reachable. of course i didn’t enable SSH first or anything, as i assumed it should just work. is it normal to take this long to update?
No, that is not normal. My HA Blue typically updates in a minute or so. In general, the thing runs HA very well. When you say “update” do you mean you just used the update button in the UI or did you do something else?
When I first got mine I tried to restore my old config resulting in crashing HA and needing to re-flash the Blue. Eventually, I ended up just starting from scratch, then one at a time adding integrations from the backup. For Zigbee, I just started over entirely.
yes, update from the GUI. i am starting from bare metal, so i don’t have any config to lose.
ok, pulled the plug and it started back up in 5.13. so much for the easy button. looks like some have had success going first to 6.6 then 7.0, so i’ll try that. after i enable terminal and ssh …
Odd that the installed version on your Blue is 5.13. another choice is just to flash the thing to the latest version. You need a Micro USB cable and a piece of software to do it. I found these instructions really helpful.
It’s really pretty simple.
- Open up the case
- Flip the SPI switch
- Hook up the USB cable to your computer
- Power on the Blue
- Use Etcher to flash it
- Flip the SPI switch back again
- Button it all up and power it on.
That’ll get a clean, current install. Given that you don’t have any existing config, it’s the way I’d choose if I had the Micro USB cable handy. Be warned, I originally dragged one out of some dusty drawer and it didn’t work. A new one from amazon basics worked perfectly.
thanks, i was hoping to just point and click - i’m getting too old for this stuff - but if i can’t hack around the GUI/OS problems i’m not afraid to crack the case and flash it. just would prefer to spend my time, you know, actually using the thing.
Heh, I had exactly the same concerns (too old for this stuff lol). Trust me on this. Cracking the case is just a few screws. You’ll need an appropriately sized alan wrench. The rest of it is also trivially easy. I got it first try once PocketRob gave me that link and I had an actual working micro USB cable.
Do as you want, but don’t fear flashing the thing. It’s way easier than it sounds and it’ll take you no more than 10 minutes start to finish if you have the right cable.
How it works is that little switch just changes if from booting from the eMMC drive to a built-in loader which, to windows, makes it appear like a drive. From there, etcher flashes it. No fuss, no bother.
thanks, i got it upgraded w/o cracking any nuts. for those who venture here i followed the other thread and used the terminal to manually upgrade, first to 6.6, then to 7.0. the only issue i ran into is that i had to manually reboot the box after each update, as something in the reconnect logic is hosed. as stated by JD, the update only takes about 10 seconds. then i was also able to update the core no problem.
ha os update --version 6.6
ha os update --version 7.0
