New HA Green, New Zwave G8

I'm brand new to HA and just getting set up. I've had many years using Homeseer and am upgrading to HA. My PC and tech capabilities are sound.
I've had HA discover several devices (ethernet connected such as Denon receiver, DVD player, and Sony TV. and I've integrated them with no problem. I've been studying several books and youtube training.
When trying to create a new Zwave network, the brand-new G8 zwave stick will not become recognized by HA. I’ve had to search manually to select the zwave setup under integrations (it’s not discovered automatically). Under “setup Z-Wave,” I've tried the “Recommended Installation.”
Under “Select your Z-Wave adapter” The circle to select is: USB device path ttyS2-/dev/ttyS2, s/n: n/a.
The other selection is “grayed out” (socket device path).
When selecting the circle option, I get: “starting app” wit “configuring app above and a spinning circle.
The G8 is firmly plugged into the green. Eventually, the start times out. I can select “devices’ and the zwave option tell allows me to simply “turn on” the JS app. It then tells me that it’s running.
Under devices and zwave I can see a “driver: Failed to initialize the driver: ZwaveError: Timeout while waiting for an ACK from the controller.”
Is this a G8 problem, and in an attempt to find some correction here I just ordered a new ZWA-2 (combination Zwave and Zigbee module). I don’t want to experiment with my running Homeseer Zwave + stick, as it’s being use in Homeseer.
Thanks for any help.
