At 4:45 pm, I started my new Home Assistant Green to the task of restoring a backup from my existing Home Assistant system. The message on the Green was “This could take up to 45 minutes.” No biggie, I figured it would do its thing, and maybe be done sooner than that worst-case projection.
Now it is over 95 minutes since then, more than double that worst-case warning:
Did I do something wrong? I used the full backup from last night, downloaded it to my computer, and then uploaded it to the Green to do the restoration. This should be straightforward, right?
The TAR file is 546,470 KB (a little over half a gigabyte). Unfortunately, there is no progress bar, no indicator of where it is in the process. Should a brand-new Green take this long? Is that backup too large?
Did you try to (force) refresh the page? The backup is locally restored after the user upload is completed and it also happened to me that the spinner just spins forever and doesn’t tell that the restore actually is complete already.
Hahahahaha! Nope, didn’t try that, and it worked. Guess I figured the page would auto-refresh once the process completed, and was reluctant to mess with that page on the concern of botching up the process. Should have realized that once the upload was done, the local browser instance had no bearing on the rest of the restore.
Reviving this - I am trying to restore a nigh brand new HA setup from a Raspberry Pi 3 to a HA Green. The backup file is 23MB
I have tried restoring multiple times, with the instance running up to 8h in the browser window. The computer did go to sleep in the process but that shouldn’t matter?
The HA and laptop are connected to the same switch via ethernet
I did try refreshing the browser window but it just returns to the HA Welcome page with ‘create my smart home’ or restore options.
Pretty sure I tried the reset button on the HA Green at some point along the way (I first tried setting this up 3 weeks ago and have been away) but to no effect.
I’ve tried multiple times to use the restore backup, I’m creating a backup from a Mac hosted VM of HA that is ~ 190MB in size. I do the backup from HA, download it to the system I’m access the Green, use “Restore from Backup”, then accept that this will wipe and restore everything and could take 45m or longer. I’ve let it sit hours, last time > 12 hours, and it never finishes or provides any other message.
I had a similar issue. First, refresh your browser to see if it is actually doing anything. Mine would error out immediately but I didn’t know that until I refreshed and the browser returned to the screen to pick a file. In order to get mine to restore to the backup, I first had to begin setting up the Green as a new device, process all pending updates, and then restore to the backup. I can’t guarantee this was all necessary, but it was sufficient. It seems there may have been a compatibility issue with the Supervisor or Core version. Perhaps there is an implicit assumption that your brand new Green will always have a more recent version of these components than the old device you are migrating from.
