New hassio install. Cannot connect

Installing hassio for the first time. Followed this guide exactly

Have a brand new ELEMENT Element14 Raspberry Pi 3 B+
Downloaded this image https://github.com/home-assistant/hassos/releases/download/1.7/hassos_rpi3-64-1.7.img.gz
Flashed image onto 16 GB SD card with Etcher - Successfull
Put the SD card in the Pi, connected ethernet to router and plugged it in with a 2.5A power supply

I can see in my router that it is connected and assigned an IP address. I have tried both http://hassio.local:8123/ and directly to the IP assigned by the router http://192.168.x.x:8123

All I get is:
This site can’t be reached
192.168.x.x refused to connect.

Not sure how to go about trouble shooting at this point. The guides seem to assume everything will just work.

Try checking / refreshing the router page again. I’ve seen that on new install the ip address gets assigned and then changes a few minutes later.

I gave it about an hour. Then pulled the power for 20 seconds and powered back on. There is definitely something going on because the Ethernet lights are blinking, my router is seeing it and assigning an IP address. The IP is the same as the initial boot and I still get the same message trying to access.

Make sure that you have reserved the IP address in the router for the Pi so it does not change.
Also, a first time install does seem to take much longer than 20 minutes (and restarts are quite slow as well)
The recommendation currently is the 32 bit version, not 64 bit and I understand there are some issues with the 64 bit one. (Despite that, I am using the 64 bit and it works perfectly for my components and setup. YMMV)

Ok. I’ve reserved the IP. I’ll give it some more time. It was my understanding that I should get some type of hassio loading screen though and I don’t even get that. If I don’t get anything in a few hours I’ll try the 32bit version. Could it be that I only have a 16GB SD card? The guide says 32GB recommended but I saw people post saying that 16 was fine. I have nothing on it but hassio.

Success. I guess I was just being impatient or maybe it was reserving the IP. Took about an hour and a half but I’m getting this now:

Thanks for the help David and 3R

Yeah… look I have been using HA for almost a year and Hassio for most of that time and I resetup Hassio with ResinOS a few times and even I got caught out on the weekend with HassOS and the amount of time it takes to actually DO anything. I swear I thought it was dead a few times but it all came good.

Even after you get that above screen, you may well get an unable to connect error etc etc but eventually after what seems like an eternity it will come good.

It is also VERY slow when you restart the server - much slower than ResinOS and again, just be patient. Once it is all running it seems just as fast as before - it’s just a bastard waiting all the time.

Incidentally, this is one of the benefits of Lovelace - if you’re only doing UI changes, no need to restart anymore.

I’ve been running HA on my 8 core linux server for a few months and it comes up in less than a minute so I was used to that. I am running my security system on HA and want be able to run off battery if the power goes out. Even with a 1500VA UPS I can only keep my linux server up for 5-10 minutes. (it;s an old AMD FX-8350 power hog) I figured I could get a couple hours with just the router, gateway and RP.

Just managing expectations here…

Also, though I can’t prove it, I’ve come across multiple rpi’s that are slightly different then others and even perform differently. But with the same model number and hardware specs (according to the website).

Sorry to bring up a old post, but is there a way to check HA to see what version was installed 32 or 64?

Thanks
