I have installed Home Assistant Yellow and it is working. I can connect with my desktop.
What next for the newbie

If you can connect to your local ha instance with your desktop then use the same address for phone.
But there are two addresses you can use so use internal connection url and be connected to your wifi.
I am completely new to this. I have lots of home goodies and thought it would be a good idea to link and control them.
I have tried as you suggest but woth the same result.
I don’t have iphone but are you sure you are connected to your wifi?
I mean if you are connected to your wifi you should be able to access your ha instance on any device.
Unless your are not connected to vlan ssid but you probably are not.

Can 2 devices log on with the same id/password. I am connected to the wifi and can contrrol and see other devices such as car charger and battery/solar. I am logged in at the moment from my pc. perhaps I should log out to try.

Access to your ha instance is platform independent.
No matter what device you use connected to your wifi you should be able to connect to your ha. It is different from other devices as you can see them because they are probably cloud operated.
Maybe you miss configured something and you ha instance changed ip address.
You should be using static ip for it. You can set it up on router.
