New Scottish Fire Alarm Rules - Suggestions for Hardware?

Well today is the day! But I still haven’t decided what to get and there really isn’t much on offer. I personally think i’ll be holding off until there is something more suitable on the market, although I doubt a change in Scottish law will have manufacturers scrambling to release things :joy:

What did you guys end up installing?

Definitely NOT FireAngel, faulty devices, short battery life

Yeah, I saw only bad things of FireAngel

Homematic ip smoke alarm seems to be the only suitable system I can find

I have been using the FireAngel Pro Connected alarms for well over a year now and have had no issues with them. The bridge is pretty rubbish, but you can build your own and integrate them directly into Home Assistant. See discussion here and the direct link to the project on GitHub here.

Wow, so the community made solution works better than the one they sell? I guess the same could be said about the actual alarms if their hub is anything to go by

Yes, the community bridge has been rock solid for me. There’s nothing wrong with the alarms, just the bridge they sell is very flaky. I wasn’t able to find anything better and am totally happy with how the alarms are working with the custom built bridge.

I’m quite sure late to this, but I found the Heiman C1-M is a Carbon Monoxide detector that supports Matter, Thread, and Zigbee by using a Silicon Labs EFR32MG24 chip, and has Intertek ETL certification per UL 2034. Amazon has the C1-W model which isn’t Matter unfortunately.

Alibaba does have it, but I’d have to buy in bulk even though I only need 1.

I’m considering buying their minimum quantity, then selling the extras on eBay or wherever. Do you think you might buy one if I did that? Or a few? Just trying to gauge interest. I know I’m super interested, but unsure of others.

I’m afraid I no longer need a Carbon Monoxide detector since the gas boiler was replaced with a heat pump. Smoke alarms though, I will definitely still keep an eye open for those.

“You may not need a carbon monoxide detector, but you probably should have one anyway”

I mean I have the one that the fire brigade left me with when they came and installed the new 10 year smoke alarms (I’m disabled, so apparently got it free). I’m not so worried about an interconnected CO monitor. But smoke alarms for sure -

The same brand does make a smoke alarm, but it’s very difficult to find anything that is not Zigbee, even though they make a Thread version. I am pivoting away from Zigbee to Thread and Matter for better compatibility.

I think the Heiman HS1SA-M supports both Zigbee and Thread, just like the Heiman C1-M that I purchased is supposed to do (I haven’t received it yet, but they tell me it supports both). The C1-M uses a Silicon Labs EFR32MG24, which lists support for Zigbee and Thread. Home Assistant’s SkyConnect ZBT-1 also uses a Silicon Labs chip, the EFR32MG21, and supports both Zigbee and Thread, so I guess this wouldn’t be unusual for any devices using a Silicon Labs chip.

I don’t see Thread mentioned on Heiman’s product page, only Zigbee, but when I contacted the manufacturer they assured me that the C1-M does support Matter+Thread. I guess it doesn’t surprise me that Zigbee would be the main advertised feature, not Thread. Doesn’t seem like anyone really cares about Thread yet.

Heiman does publicly say they have Thread accreditations on https://www.heimantech.com/news/?type=detail&id=90

And https://smarthomescene.com/reviews/heiman-zigbee-smoke-sensor-and-alarm-review/ says “…devices include ZigBee and Thread wireless software.”
