Will it be “The One” or just another wannabe for “One standard to rule them all”? Time will tell.

Yeah… I’m interested in seeing how this plays out. Thankfully, we already have a platform to tie all of our smart home devices together in one place
If CHIP ever sees daylight, it should (theoretically) make it easier to develop integrations. Although all home automation systems tie disparate devices together, it comes at the cost of developing integrations for each device technology (and maintaining them). A single standard has been the “Holy Grail” since at least when I started experimenting with home automation in 2006.
I’m optimistic but also realistic about CHIP’s chances of being widely adopted. Getting all of these players to agree on common standards and then commit to adopting and implementing them is no easy feat. For example, Thread was supposed to be ‘the standard’ but didn’t gain traction. It appears that it’s going to get a second chance under the guise of CHIP.
I hadn’t thought of that, that’s a really good point. Hopefully CHIP does come to fruition.
I mean…ok they all work together on one protocol to rule them all…but to be honest? I have read their claim on their site that they’re proposing there.
They don’t define a medium. WiFi is the worst medium to have for low power sensors. And would also clutter your Wifi Network. And i think most people don’t want to buy a rack full of switches just to connect their door sensors to the network. That only leaves things like Blutooth LE (bad bad) LoraWAN or some kind of proprietary medium. Which means we’re back where we were. To Base stations for communication.
Next thing is they claim IP brings a lot of already implemented security stuff. But what if i don’t use that correctly? What if my WiFi Password is bad or the router i got from my provider has a vulnerability i don’t know about?
To be honest, on their site it sounds a little bit like they’re relying too much on it which would be horrible. The claim they’ll use some kind of authentication methods, but how do i control this?
And people should learn subnetting if they have a big house…
Last but not least for me it’s much too cloudy. I want to be able to unplug my router and don’t have to sit in the dark because my light switch can’t communicate with the cloud so the cloud can tell the light to go on.
The standard SEEMS to claim that it’ll work without cloud systems but i really doubt that.
I’m not saying cloud is bad, it’s nice for a secure remote connection or some playthings like alexa, but depending on it and not be able to do anything without it isn’t my thing. I don’t wanna freeze because Amazon throws a tantrum some day.
Last but not least…every Thing that communicates over IP can phone home. Sure use a firewall but then it’ll probably stop working.
I really hope that it works out into something useful…
There’s no money in an open standard. Force everyone to buy hardware in order to use the proprietary control protocol and profit off your data and over priced hardware they know you have to buy. People fall for it now, why would/should companies change that model?
This is very true and the reason I’m waiting to see what ever comes out of this. It’s not like companies like these companies are going to abandon their current models that make them piles of money.
Those are big players, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s money to be made then they’re on board with the new standard as long it gives them the capacity to harvest the data on our usage, etc.
Reading the literature on the page, I noted this paragraph.
Some companies might focus their product offerings on the protocol over Wi-Fi/Ethernet, while others might target the protocol over Thread or BLE, and still others might support a combination. Please contact individual companies to find out what their intentions are for future product support.
Sounds like ZigBee and ZLL and ZHA and allowing them to also create custom extension Al over again and we know that helped the consumer
On the heels of CHIP comes the opening up of ZWave…
I think we will add “Connected Home IP” Component in some day.
Like we can’t use english only, some people use their own language.
It is good trial but I think it will be another standard maybe.
