New to Home Assistant - Please could I get some advice

I am a Raspberry P owner and have just installed Hassbian on my system.

Through my web browser I can see my Home Assistant home page.

What should I do next?

Can anyone point me in the right direction for a low cost project that would get me orientated with the system?

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,
Try to power on/off some leds with raspberry GPIO from HA portal, pretty economic.

First I’d look at the list of components and see what you’ve either already got, or the free online services that are relevant.

For example:

  1. Push a message to your mobile about your morning commute, or when you’re at work about your return commute.
  2. Play welcome home music on your media player when you get home

It’s also worth looking through the cookbook and Github at people’s setups.

I love these two ideas @Tinkerer, thank you for suggesting them!

  1. Could you point me in the right direction where I could learn more about setting up push notification?

  2. Where would I grab the data from about my morning commute?

  3. I have PiCorePlayer and Logitech Media Server to stream music around my house. Please can you point me in the right direction to learn how I could integrate it with Home Assistant and how to make it play music on my arrival home.

Thank you again for sharing these wonderful ideas with me and hope you would be happy to assist me a little further

Hope to hear back from you

1 - pick a platform from the components and give it a spin. Pushbullet is dead easy to get started with, I moved to telegram because you can send messages in and out, but it’s more complicated. No reason you can’t try several and pick a favourite. (components from the menu on the homeassistant website)

2 - Google travel time. (components from the menu on the homeassistant website) make it more advanced with presence detection such as owntracks or gps logger.

3 - media players and automations. (components from the menu on the homeassistant website for media player, getting started for automations)

Hope this helps.

  1. Here

  2. Here

  3. And over here

All of those assume you’ve read the docs - at the very least all the sections up to (and including) the Automation section.
