Newbie: How rename a device?

I am unable to rename a device.

I go to Devices, then click the device in the list, then click the edit pencil button on top right of page. But the Name field is disabled. The Area field I can change.

Searching the forum I see this has happened before after an update in 2022 but no one else seems to be experiencing this now.

I have the latest updates on HA Green:

  • Core 2023.12.3
  • Supervisor 2023.12.0
  • Operating System 11.2
  • Frontend 20231208.2

I have restarted.

I am complete newbie. I only have two devices. I want to shorten the names for a clearer dashboard. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks
Phil

Which integration?

I did this yesterday for a couple of WLED devices. No issue. Same system versions as you.

Hello Tom

I only have 2 hardware devices: The Everything Presence One and an Aqara Switch.

If I go to Integrations>ESPHome I can use the Device Rename menu to change the name (to “EP1”). However, in Devices (and Entities and Dashboards) the name remains “Everything Presence One db0d7c”. The Device Name field is disabled (but the Area field is changable).

I am unable to find the Aqara Switch under Integrations and as above I am unable to change the name in the Device edit page. It is disabled.

I got a 3rd hardware device - a zigbee smart bulb. I can rename this device without problem. Exactly as expected.

However I am still unable to change the name of the EP1 or Aqara Switch.

I even removed the EP1 device from HA and then re-added it. However, the Device Name field is still disabled and so I am unable to rename it.

I am stuck unable to rename 2 devices (I can rename a 3rd). The HA Green, all the kit, is brand new. Can anyone suggest anything to try to enable the Device Field names?

Guessing I must have inadvertently changed a setting somewhere, is it worth me resetting the HA Green entirely?
As here: Resetting the device – Home Assistant Green

Seems drastic but I have no other idea. I have removed and re-added the 2 devices but still cannot rename.

I have worked out I can change the names in Dashboards. Which is helpful.

Unfortunately 2 Devices (different Integrations) are still stuck with ridiculously long and unhelpful names in Settings. This is no big deal with 4 devices but could become quickly unmanageable as I add Devices.

All Devices are working as expected in the Automations & Scripts I am testing with. It’s only this naming that is a problem.

From the lack of responses I guess this problem is particular to my system and presumably something I set during set up (although I cant imagine what or why it affects some Devices and not others). I will do a system reset on my HA Green but do not have an SD card nor SD card writer. I will buy these after xmas. Hope this fixes it.

I now have a 4th hardware Device - my mobile phone with the HA app installed. This Device, my phone, has a Device name of “SM-A105FN” and I cannot change it.

Please somebody put me out of misery!

Is my expectation that Devices can be given useful and meaningful names misplaced? Please could someone simply confirm that I should be able to change the name of all devices.

Ah, I see the phone can be renamed in the HA app itself which is then reflected in the Device name.

I did a HAGreen reset after which I can now change the names of all my Zigbee Devices but still cannot change the name of my EP1. Why the problem afflicted two devices and now only one confounds me.

This time I made certain to have done the minimum to register these devices and am confident this is not as a result of having inadvertently changed something untoward.

I then even deleted the EP1 from HA, renamed it on my router, then readded but no difference.

Anyway, thought I’d keep you up to date.

I am having a similar issue. I can’t seem to edit device names at the moment. The pencil logo is disabled when using a browser to edit. But after reading your post I tried using the App and I can rename it there which is interesting.

I am using HA in a docker though - not HAGreen.

Unfortunately this has happened around the same time as I took apart my whole network and reinstalled as I was moving house. So it’s hard to pinpoint what the cause is/was.

Going to “Settings” - “System” results in “Error while loading page system” so I can’t reboot from within HA and have to stop/restart the docker.

I had seen that before last year but that was an issue a few people had that was resolved with a new version.

But I will assume this has something to do with it.

I am running the latest version.

Core : 2024.1.3
Frontend: 20240104.0

Hello AstroBBoy

I no longer experience this problem. I did a reset and maybe that resolved the problem. Or, more likely, maybe my problem was always user stupidity. I was banging delete and/or backspace, neither of which remove the default name and I saw this as a disabled input. I hate to think I did this for days but I probably wouldn’t believe me either. Doh. Embarrassing.

But your problem sounds different to mine. Sorry I cannot help.

Phil

I’ve had the same issue and the same solution. I guess you could call it user stupidity, but the symptoms are (at least slightly) misleading. When clicking on the pencil icon on the ribbon with device name (top right), ALL devices show a default dicovered name. But some devices have the same name entered into the “Name” field, indicated as dark gray letters. Other devices are just showing the default name, which is not entered into the field. They have slightly lighter grey letters. If you’re not careful you can mistake the two. So, if you’re using DELETE or BACKSPACE on the second type of entries, nothing happens and it looks like the “Name” field is disabled. The solution is just to start typing a new name and this then replaces the default name. It would be useful for new users to have a more clear distinction between the two types of entries. But then again, once you learn this, you are unlikely to ever forget it.

Hello bogdan,

Ha ha. I’m glad I am not the only one! And thanks for the fuller explanation. At least now anyone else being driven mad by this might find our responses and can quietly move on to enter the new device name.

Cheers
Phil
