Nfc tag : how does it work?

If I stick a NFC tag on my phone, how can I use this to trigger an automation ? In other words, how will HA know that a specific NFC tag arrives home ? How does HA read the tag ?

Does your phone have an NFC Reader?

You can also build a Reader with an ESP32 Controller and place inside of the door.

There are NFC tags out there which constists some unique number inside them.

1.When a reader reads the specific tag, you can initiate the automation.

  1. If your phone has a reader, your phone can call home assistant to initiate an automation when it reads a specific tag.

As previous post, you can build esp based readers and initiate automation from esp

You can also put a label on your phone and put your phone to esp reader to initiate an automation, it is same as option 1.

Thanks !!! Other than building a reader myself (not something I am comfortable with) is there a NFC reader on the market ?
