No location information

Yes, I have tried the tips in the Troubleshooting FAQs.

With the end of Life360, and since I am subscribing to NabuCasa and have the companion app on my Android phone, it seemed like a good idea to use the device_tracker.device_tracker.sm_g981u1 entity.

Except that it is always “Unknown”.

The location permission for the Home Assistant App is “Always”

This from the troubleshooting:

  1. In Settings > Companion app > Manage sensors, ensure that the following Location Sensors are enabled: Background Location, Location Zone and Single Accurate Location. If you use multiple servers, make sure the correct servers have each sensor enabled.

The docs use “Settings” ambiguously. Sometimes it means settings in the device (phone) and sometimes it means in settings Home Assistant. At any case since there was a link to my Home Assistant settings, that’s what I did. There is no “Companion App” in my Home Assistant settings menu.

Yes, I restarted the app on the phone and restarted Home Assistant. At least twice.

So, how do I get the location from my phone? What did I miss? (I know that the GPS on the phone is working because I see my location on Google Maps and when I use Google Maps for directions it tracks my location just fine.)

the link on your phone will actually open the correct settings menu but its the same Settings menu that all HA users have even on the desktop, under the menu.

please log out of the app and log back in. Make sure when you copy and paste the URL that you remove any path to a dashboard as that does not allow the device to properly register with the HA server.

When I do that, I am unable to log back into the app: Now what?

check the URL and make sure its valid. https is not valid on internal URLs, have you tried manually entering the URL?

Thanks. Your prompt reply is appreciated. Log out of the app and log back in worked. At least to getting the location.

I also restarted Home Assistant, but there is still no “Companion App” in my Home Assistant settings menu.

and you are checking this from the phone app yes? it will only show up there you wont see it on the desktop

Which is the ambiguity I am referring to. In “Troubleshooting”, “Settings” is a link to my Home Assistant settings page. So you can see why I am looking in Settings → Companion App.

settt

Yes open the HA app, go to Settings and select companion app. If you click on that link from your cell phone it will take you to the correct settings page. On the desktop it will not show up because you are not using the companion app to access the settings page.

Remember that page is about issues on your phone so indeed we assume you are troubleshooting from your device  if you want to submit a docs change to make that more clear please feel free to click on the edit link down below. But keep in mind the entire site references the phone.

OK. Got it. "open the HA app ON THE PHONE. Thanks…
The troubleshooting instructions leave out this important detail.
