Node-RED completely unable to talk to HA

Was hoping for some help here as I’m having a pretty serious issue and kind of at a loss. I just got home from vacation to discover my Node-RED Add-on is completely unable to communicate with my Home Assistant instance. It says it is connected but nothing actually works: it can’t pull any state and all service calls fail. You can see in the environment data its pretty clearly unable to communicate:

I’ve turned on debug logging to see if I could get a hint here but all it does is capture the failures, there doesn’t seem to be any further indication as to why.

For some basic information, my HA is v0.101.3 and my Node-Red addon is v5.0.3. Based on history it seems like it stopped working about a week ago. I did update both HA and Node-RED around that time but both were only patch updates (HA 0.101.2 -> 0.101.3 and NR from 5.0.2 -> 5.0.3). Nothing in the patch notes jumped out at me but I tried rolling back NR to 5.0.2 anyway and it didn’t change anything. I can try rolling back HA but its a bit trickier since my only backup with v0.101.2 is 2 weeks old so I wanted to check if anyone else had a similar issue first.

Also any suggestions for debugging this and getting more info on what is going on? I’m really not sure how to even go about this since it seems to be a connection failure rather then a problem with a specific flow. Would appreciate any suggestions.

EDIT: I tried rolling back to 0.101.2 anyway, no effect. Which pretty much leaves me out of ideas.

Some ideas:

  1. Have you rebooted the host completely? After 30 years of experience in computing, this is usually the best advice!
  2. Have you checked that the password in the node red config has not changed?
  3. Are you using ssl between HA and nodered? It could be that the certificate has expired
  4. Start node red in debug mode:

  1. yes, I restarted all the individual software pieces and then when that didn’t help I rebooted the hardware. Also didn’t help unfortunately
  2. no it’s not changed, double checked just now
  3. not using ssl
  4. tried that, that’s what I meant earlier with log level debug, didn’t really provide any useful info. Although just noticed “trace” so I’m trying that now

Speaking of logs, how do you get to the complete logs? The add-on UI only shows the last 100 lines or so and doesn’t seem to have any way to get to the complete thing.
EDIT: NVM, found full logs in portainer

So with log-level to debug restart node-red. It should give you a lot of info. If you want you can post the output. Multiple pairs of eyes might help!

In the config I can see that you are using a local DNS at 192.168.1.1
Is this still working? Anyhting weird on the DNS side there?
In my case, I can see my DNS in-house server. If this one doesn’t work, then things won’t go well!
Otherwise, I have also started mine in debug mode to compare and nothing is popping out.

That’s my router so yea that should be right for local DNS. I assume http://hassio/homeassistant is correct right? I’m used to seeing connections to http://hassio.local but not just http://hassio. I don’t set that though, that’s automatically set by using the hassio config so I assume it’s correct.

Should I be able to ping that address from other things on the network though? I’m trying from my computer and I don’t get a response…

For whatever reason, mine also say http://hassio/homeassitant and it works… It is a bit strange that the port is missing but the log says that.

Yea I thought it was odd too but you can see above I’m not even able to set that. Well I mean I can set it but I would need to uncheck the “I use hassio” checkbox which would be incorrect since I do use hassio.

I wish it logged more info about the API calls it’s actually making. At either end for that matter(HA or Node Red). It seems hard to believe that there’s no error at all with these API calls that aren’t getting anything…

Can you save all your nodered config, remove nodered, reinstall it and put back the config.
Apart from that, no more idea on my side.

I did that actually and unfortunately still no luck. I uninstalled the Node-RED addon, deleted the node-red folder in my configuration, reinstalled it and then re-imported. Still the same.

I’m not really sure what to do here at this point but willing to try pretty much anything since I’m getting kinda desperate. I have a ton of automation in node-red that I rely on daily :frowning:

Seems it’s connected, but then can’t find the Entity ID.

Have you tried UNCHECKING the “I USE HASSIO” option and manually putting in the URL and the token?

Do you have a screenshot of your Portainer you can share to see all the containers?

The eta_trip_id.txt file error is ok. I have a flow which kicks off when I’ve begun travelling home and starts sending trip updates to Nest. Nest requires a trip ID when you do so and then later that you use that same trip ID to tell it your trip is done. So at the start I write that trip ID out to a file and then delete that file when the trip is done. What is happening there is at start-up it checks for that file to determine if I was in the middle of a trip after a restart or something to determine if it should pick back up where it left off. There’s error handling for it but no way to fully get rid of the error log I could see.

I have not tried to uncheck the box yet. What should I be putting in that case? Is it just the URL of my home assistant instance like http://hassio:8123? Or do I have to put the path to the API (which is like http://hassio:8123/api I think?) Also I assume then that I go get a long-lived access token for one of my users and put that in?

I would use http://ipaddressofhassio:8123. You should not append /api after it.
