Odd issue with automations

So I have an odd “problem”. I have a fairly simple home automation system controlled via HomeAssistant. It includes smart plugs, switches, sensors, etc from various vendors. On that same network are multiple Alexa devices.

Home automation is controlled via HA, but as everyone knows, Alexa can see/discover devices as well and often can perform actions with them.

Before going to bed, we got into the habit of saying “Alexa, turn off the 1st floor lights”… and all of the appropriate interior 1st floor lights turn OFF. (if we don’t say this phrase HA would turn them off at 2am anyway).

The problem is “1st floor lights” isn’t an Alexa group… nor is it a HA Zone, label, or location. Each of the lights on the “1st floor” are controlled by Kasa (TPLink) plugs… But no groups are setup in the Kasa app either. Several lights are in my Living Room area and the rest in the Family Room area.

When I say the Alexa phrase to trigger the lights on/off, I don’t see anything in the HA log so I know I’m not trigger a HA automation.

I HAVE NO IDEA where “1st floor lights” is defined! lol… I want to add a device to it, but for the life of me cannot figure this out. Yes this should probably be posted in a forum for the Alexa devices, but I can’t seem to find a good one.

Thoughts?

So I figured this out… Rather than delete the topic, I figured I would post my fix in case others have the same issue.

Turns out there IS a “device group” setup in my Alex app (boy do I hate the UI of the Alexa app!!!). I have a group called “First Floor” that includes my Living Room and Family Room groups. So a group of groups.

I added my new device to the proper group (Family room), and now it works as expected.
