i’m a newer user here and of HA, for a log time i got openhab, a very completed system but not so friendly with all binding. I’ve appreciated very much the HA, i’ve installed hassio as complete OS on rasperryPI and as a VM. Everything is going well I’ve found all my systems (xiaomi, ESP, tuya, CAM and other). When I’ve started to focus on cloud and remote control I found that the APP only work on duckdns and cloud service is payment service, why? I can’t use duckdns because my network is not directly exposed to internet (There is ISP router closed with password and another router as firewall before my network router). With openhab there is a free could service that it can obviously accessible everywhere through a portal, more over the app is able to connect in my network or outside on cloud service with password to menage the house outside. So if for openhab has been so easy and FREE, why are there so trouble with HA (that seems more advanced on my opinion) and the service on cloud is payment type? Moreover as for me duckdns can’t work, witch the other possibility for Hassio to be reached from outside? thank you
Thanks to everyone in order to answer @pergola.fabio i’ve not yet ask directly to my ISP if it’s possible to forward port. Anyway forwarding ports could not be the best solution by security point of view.
What do you think about google home and its api and consolle project service? Does anyone have any experiences about it?
From what I remember from my dalliance with openhab, the remote access ‘just worked’.
But stop for a minute to consider that.
You have no ports opened on your router.
Therefore you have no means to request information direct from your instance.
So it has to make a request ‘outside’ to see if anyone is calling and find out what information is requested.
Thus there must be a server somewhere dedicated to listening and acting as an intermediary
This is just like Nabu casa, servers aren’t free. Our Nabu casa clients pay for this service and the convenience it provides. It also helps fund HA development, so hats off to them.
If openhab are funding the server themselves it must just come from donations, and that (even if their developers are donating their time) must hinder their ability to fund trips/conferences etc.
The paranoid ocd in me (on the whole) prefers the way we run (IMHO)
Nobody is forcing you to use Nabu Casa. You can set up cloud access yourself if you want to. Nabu Casa exists for users who would like Nabu Casa to take care of most of the connection stuff and also the fee supports the people working on HA as their daily job.
As been said before in this topic, I also use my own domain name with a subdomain pointing to my HA instance. Only thing I had to do was do port forwarding and set up HTTPS with Let’s Encrypt.
If you search around on the forum here, you should find plenty of example how to configure your system
dear @Skye it hasn’t been my intention to speak about money, i’ve understood that nabu fee would be supports work on HA. I will try to make a remote connection in other way, if it would no possible I will take nabu in consideration. Anyway take in consideration that if a service is not free of charge it take the behaviour of private service and not open…
