I personally would like to see who’s at home, when viewing on the frontend Map. It would be good if there was an option to enable that.
My use case being that I’ve been in work, checked that my daughter is on her way home from school and then had that momentary panic when I can’t see her, before realising she’s got home
It would also be nice to be able to select trackers to not be shown on the map all the time.
For instance, I have a tropical storm tracker and the map becomes totally useless when the storm is far away from my actual home location where most of my trackers typically would be located.
as a band aide (not solution), you can use the custom:template card in combination with the map card in a panel layout and conditionally show whatever you want. I’ve gone that route for about a year now. You can even disable the built in map, add a dashboard that’s just a map, and put that in the sidebar.
A lot of new users use default_config because it’s built into the install. Many people don’t even know it can be disabled. You’re most likely from a time when default_config didn’t exist.
One of the good things about the built in map is being able to setup zones directly on the map and handle Persons and Users from the menu there as well. I can understand that ‘Home’ could get crowded if all devices were shown but a possible solution to that is to have the device shown as a sensor at the top of the map, with the state, rather than over the actual Home.
If it were possible to enable/disable who’s shown, or in finity’s case, what is shown from the GUI that would be a nice feature too.
It sounds like the Map card with custom:template pretty much covers what I’d like to achieve, so thank you for posting this Petro, I’ll have a play about. I will leave this suggestion open though because if the functionality of the Map/custom:template card could be incorporated into the built-in Map, that would be superb.
Regarding the storm trackers, in that case you can set up a template sensor to get the distance from home (or from you) and have that become a trigger to show it or not, or get a notification.
I tried to use balloobs method to put something in the sidebar recently and could never get it to work. It wasn’t a real big deal, mostly just toying around, so I never pursued it any further. Maybe I will now.
A problem with showing who’s home on the map is that, depending on how many people or devices are home, it can be hard to see the individual people. Even with only a few people at home, when I tested it with a map card in a panel view, most of the icons were on top of each other and I could only see one or two of them. This is obviously worse when using trackers like Nmap as they will all be at the centre of the home zone.
An option to have an indication of the number of people in the home zone, which can be clicked on to be able to see a list of the people would probably be a good compromise.
I totally agree. I think a nice solution would be the ability to overlay the sensors related to devices at the top of the view and to be able to choose if these were conditionally visible both at the top (if home) and on the map. Seems possible with Petro’s solution and would be a nice built-in feature I think.
