Hi everyone,
I have 35 Nanoleaf devices, all connected to Home Assistant via Matter over Thread. Firmware updates do not complete on any of them: the lights remain controllable, but the update progress indicator keeps running and the firmware remains unchanged.
My setup:
- Home Assistant Core: 2026.10.1
- Matter Server: 9.2.0
I analysed the Matter Server log for one device attempting to update from 4.1.3 to 5.1.45. This particular device is not managed through the Nanoleaf app.
The first attempt on October 11, 2026 shows:
20:14:50 β Update started, targeting version 327981 (5.1.45).
20:14:50 β The device reported its current software version as 262403.
20:14:51 β BDX transfer started.
20:17:05 β The provider moved from Downloading to WaitForApply.
20:17:05 β The device sent ApplyUpdateRequest for version 327981.
20:17:05 β The provider replied with Proceed and no delay.
20:17:05 β The device reported a transition from Downloading to Applying.
Three minutes later, the server reported that the device had not re-established a session after the expected reboot and forced a reconnection. The device reconnected immediately and continued accepting lighting commands.
Later, the device reported Applying β Idle with reason Success twice:
October 12, 02:14:54 β Applying β Idle.
October 12, 02:34:50 β A new QueryImage request still reported the old version, 262403.
October 12, 08:34:54 β Applying β Idle again.
October 12, 08:54:51 β Another QueryImage request still reported version 262403.
The log contains three download/apply cycles for this device, all targeting 5.1.45.
Other findings:
- No NotifyUpdateApplied command or VersionApplied event appears in the captured log.
- No explicit OTA or BDX timeout/error is logged for this device.
- The server repeatedly resets the stalled OTA state due to inactivity, generally every 20 minutes.
- The cached 5.1.45 image is validated successfully by the server.
- Home Assistant still displays firmware 4.1.3.
The update issue affects all 35 Nanoleaf devices, although this detailed log analysis covers only one of them.
Has anyone experienced the same issue with Nanoleaf firmware updates through Matter over Thread? Is there a known issue with the OTA provider or with firmware application on these devices?
Thanks everyone for your help.
