Outdoor cameras for barn

Hello,

I am looking for some outdoor cameras for an outdoor barn. I have 1 ethernet cable going to the barn and I want to have the following cameras:
2x PTZ on the outside
1x for in an inside corner to view the whole inside
I prefer all of them to be outdoor cameras as it’s a barn.
Can I connect all of them to the ethernet cable with a switch?

Do I need an NVR? I do have a Synology NAS. Maybe I can save the footage through FTP?

I want them to have:

  • At least 5 MP
  • POE

I found some Reolink cameras and they can also be integrated into Home Assistant. Are the Reolink cameras good? Are there any (other) things I need to take into account?

Thanks in advance!

You may as well have all 3 as the same camera for a new install, this onvif ptz camera from reolink should fit the bill (does not have to be this exact one if there is a newer model):

or

You just need to run ethernet from them back to where you will have a POE switch that will feed power and network to them that will then be connected to the main network.

Yes you can use a synology nas as an nvr, I currently have mine setup as one with a dedicated 10TB ironwolf drive with 3 camera’s setup through surveillance center with the client also installed on the nuc that is always fullscreen since I have an automation tied to my doorbell for one of the cameras and the monitor to auto turn on.

PTZ cameras prices tend to be high

You could replace 2 ptz with 4 or 6 fixed cams and cover same area at lower cost with constant coverage

Yes. One POE switch with single ethernet providing network is perfect

Cams generally have 100m ports and really no matter what don’t use more than like 10m bandwidth or whatever so a 1G connection could easily serve 6 cameras

I these amcrest. Great low light performance and wide view angle (103 degree). 5mp is more than enough. If you need audio you can get the models with mic. Technically you don’t need mic on every cam.

I turn off led’s and turn off black/white mode. Low light is more than enough if moonlight is present and I want color at night. If it’s not enough add some small light. Also turn off noise reduction or distant moving objects in low light ghost in and out. I live in country and and area that I cannot see in at all appears light on cameras.

Thanks, that’s already some good advice!

What about storage on my Synology NAS? Can this be done through FTP?
I actually don’t want to use Synology Surveillance station if I can avoid it.
I might also go for Frigate with Coral.
What are your thoughts about this? I don’t have any experience with this yet!

Does any of you have any knowledge/recommendations for this?
Thanks!

NVR storage should be on device running software. You may be able to do FTP but I expect it will cause you issue depending on number of camera. Also hdd are cheap. I’ve use nvr specific and old drives that failed while doing movie/photo storage and never had issue. Strangely the failed drives couldn’t do long term storage but were good enough for write demands if nvr.

You must pay per camera cost with surveillance station from what I remember. Why pay just to do simple video capture. Frigate is better long term and provides basics of NVR. Video capture and review.

I am trying to understand what you are saying.
I would like to use Frigate indeed.
Do you mean I need to have the NVR storage on my Home Assistant device? I have a NUC, so I have to see whether I can add storage to it internally or otherwise externally?

Yes. Well. On the device that runs frigate.

Yes. I don’t think FTP will work well but personally have no experience with this
