Pages not loading, and unable to reboot

Hi,

I have an intermittent problem where every so often my home assistant start operating in a weird way. Some on my addons stop working, and trying to load up pages like system or integration, throws an error ‘unable to open page xxxxx’. When I try to reboot I get an error about a missing configuration file.
While my home assistant is in this state nome of my automations get triggered.

This happens almost daily now… and like I said, my automations stop working so right now, when this happens my heating ceases to work.

The only fix is to physically switch my RPi off and then On again.

I’m running v2023.11 on RPi 4B 8gb with 128GB nvme.

Has anyone one else see this happen before? Can anyone help me diagnose what could be causing it?

Cheers

Make sure your power supply is powerful and stable and still use a power USB hub for USB devices besides the SSD.

I do not know for certain if it is the problem, but it is a common problem and your description clearly hint that the SSD connection is lost.

Thanks Wally, this makes complete sense - it might even be the reason why my ZigBee range isn’t what I’d expect it to be.

I’ve tried to look around (Amazon UK) but can’t find anything a product stating what power/amp is outputting from the ports when used in parallel.

Anyone reading this, any recommendations of a power usb hub. I’m currently running a usb sonoff ZigBee controller and an usb SSD. In the future I’ll want to run a zwave stick too.

Any recommendations will be appreciated.

Just an update, as this may help others too.
My symptoms pointed to a lack of power to the SSD (thanks @WallyR). I’ve since bought myself a powered USB hub, and so far my setup has been stable.
The USB hub I went for is this one:

atolla Powered USB 3.0 Hub 20W , 7 Multi USB Data Ports Hub splitter with Individual On/Off Switches+1 USB Smart Charging port with 5V/4A Power Adapter USB Extension for MacBook, Mac Pro and More. https://amzn.eu/d/canmYUp

I managed it pick up an Amazon warehouse one for £20.

Remember to check the state of the on/off buttons after a power outage.
If they return to off, then you have an extra manual step on rebooting your HA now.

That’s a really good thing to call out. During my initial testing I notice that this hub actually remembers the state of each port so after a power cycle only the ports that were on come back on.

Hmm, i got the same USB hub from Atolla but the 4 port version and I can’t get HA to boot from my SSD through it, only when the SSD is directly connected to a USB 3.0 on the rpi4.

I have seen a few posts about backpower, and possibly clipping the red power wire or something… but I didn’t want to do that yet

How is it all interconnected?
Here’s mine:

USB 1 = Rpi
USB 2 = SSD
USB 3 = Zigbee dongle
USB 4 - USB 7 = Empty
Power = DC power via power cable provided.
