Anyone got any experience of these in the cold (UK).
I know we’re coming out of the cold season but looking to replace an Aqara and Sonoff sensor.
The Aqara used to stop in the cold, I then bought the Sonoff which seemed to survive in the cold but now triggers randomly.
I say random as this is all in an enclosed garage, the Aqara door sensor has worked fine throughout.
There super expensive at £80 so loathed to buy it then find I have the same issues.
I had a similar problem with cold weather and a battery powered aqara door sensor in my garage. My solution was to move to a mains powered homebrew esp32 door sensor which has been bulletproof throughout the winter cold weather for me.
Battery performance just drops off during cold temperatures, that’s just a fact of life so I suspect the outdoor hue will have the same issues as you’ve experienced with the standard one unless it has some pretty impressive insulation, so I suspect you may be dissatisfied with spending £45 on it. Perhaps worth looking to see if there are any mains powered sensors that could fit the bill instead?
We have 2 of the outdoor hue motion sensors and have just replaced batteries in one and noted the last change was 15 Months prior - so pretty good battery life. Dont forget they use 2x AA batteries so battery life should be relatively good.
They are useless during the day however as they both constantly false trigger, we have no trees or bushes etc so they shouldn’t but as we only use them for lights we use an automation to disable motion detection during daylight.
I’ve struggled to find ‘outdoor’ motion sensors that run off the mains.
It doesn’t even need to be waterproof as it’s essentially under cover inside a garage.
I have 2 of them. One in the garage becasue they have a better long range detection and one outside. Having -10° some days but all are fine in term of battery usage (2*AAA, still 100% after a year). They report me daylight, temperature and motion. About motion, you can change the sensitivity. For the outdoor, mine is configured with minimum value.
Very pleased with my Hue motion sensor, which is on an outside wall (in SW England…). Battery 83% after nearly two years. Phillips themselves are pricing them at £54.99, with a two-year warranty.
According to the specs operational temperatures are -20°C to 45°C.
