Philips Hue PAR38 without Hue Bridge? (with HUSBZB-1)

I’m new to home automation, but not to tech. I’ve installed HA on a Pi4 and installed the HUSBZB-1 Zigbee/Z-Wave stick. I haven’t flashed it for Zibee2MQTT yet, don’t know if I need to.

I have 2 Philips Hue PAR38 outdoor floodlights that I want to control with HA. I do not have the Hue Bridge, I just control them with the Philips 4 way switch.

When I click Add Devices in the Zigbee coordinator, it says to make sure your devices are in pairing mode. I have searched and I cannot find any information on how to put the lights into pairing mode. Any insights? Do I need to buy the Hue Bridge? I was hoping to use HA and the HUSBZB-1 instead of the Hue Bridge so I can add other Zigbee and later possibly Z-Wave devices.

Sadly no help but, I literally got the hubsbzb yesterday with a recessed light from hue and I am facing the same issue.

Half the time the zigbee integration complains that the device integration is broken, retrying and then the light just doesn’t show up. I tried turning it off and on multiple times.

What I’m trying next is: getting a hue switch (heard you can reset lights by pressing on and off together about 10cm from the light) and that should put it in pairing mose.

Second thing I’m trying is, I ordered conbee 2 stick.

Update for me: conbee 2 worked flawlessly with deconz. Don’t add the stick via HA integration or any other service. Plug it in, install deconz, add lights. Worked flawlessly.

Hubsbzb, same steps, cannot connect to anything. I’m just going to return that and stick to conbee for now.

Typically, Hue lights are putting themselves in pairing mode automatically if they are not already paired to something else.
If you still cannot pair them, it might be a range issue. Easier said that done, but try to put the coordinator and the lights closer together, then try to pair again. If it works, you’ll likely need to add a “router/repeater” in between, e.g. another zigbee light.

Ah, another thing: PI4 is an EM radiator, especially if you’re using USB3 for anything. That can severely limit the range of the stick.
Put your stick as far as possible from the RPI4 with an USB extender cable.
