Phonetic names for devices and entities

I googled for a way to set a phonetic name for entities and devices this morning, and I found an old post I had made in the Feature Requests forum back in 2019!

Is there an official way to do this now that voice is so much more front-and-center in Home Assistant? I’m tired of every voice assistant pronouncing things incorrectly.

Yes, you can use Aliases for voice.

Are not aliases for refering to a device or entity by multiple names? This is not what I am asking for.

I just want the voice assistant to pronounce the existing name the way I want it to. It’s more of a Text-to-Speech problem than an Assistant problem.

Ah sorry, misunderstood your request. You essentially want the Alias equivalent of the friendly name (which your TTS uses) so that it’s pronounced correctly.

I honestly don’t see it as a problem outside non-English speaking languages, but your request is still valid if you set the friendly name and it’s being mispronounced.

You got it. Sometimes the Text-to-Speech just doesn’t get things right. Everything I have is an English name (I’m Canadian), but still, it’s not always correct. I think every entity or device should have an optional “Phonetic Name” attribute to tell the Text-to-Speech services how to pronounce it.

How the friendly name is spelled and how that spelling is prounced don’t always make sense to the TTS services.
