Hi all,
I’m looking for a physical temperature control that doesn’t require HVAC wiring, to feed into HA and then control a separate space heater.
My bedroom is much colder than the rest of the house, so I set up a Dreo WH517S wall-mounted space heater. It has reasonable HA intergration, and I am controlling it using Generic Thermostat in HA and feeding in temp data from a separate temp sensor across the room.
However, I would like to set up a physical controller for it that 1) displays the current set temp, and 2) has up and down buttons (or a knob) to control the setpoint for my family to use. Since it is a space heater, I don’t have HVAC wiring in the room. I’m hoping someone might have a (cheap) solution. In USA.
Ideas I have explored (without success so far):
- I have an old Nest E, and was hoping to use it without HVAC wiring. I bought a 24V wall plug-in adapter with two wires, connected to C and R as directed, but the Nest doesn’t seem to recognize the R input and insists it is not powered.
- I see a lot of folks on this forum recommending the Honeywell T6 Pro, but will that be any better if I don’t have HVAC wiring? (Also a bit more expensive than I was hoping for a tiny display and two buttons I need).
- I saw a post recommending this Tuya WiFi Smart IR Thermostat but it takes a while to ship and difficult returns. Could anyone confirm that it would work with HA?
- Finally, DYI options including this [little DIY controller] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RorDXsYIrnQ&t=1068s&ab_channel=3ATIVEVFX), which would be more than enough for my purposes, but requires soldering and coding beyond my basic understanding (I’m new to HA and would prefer more plug-and-play options if possible).
