Pi or NAS?

Currently I am running HA on a Raspberry Pi 4 with 8gb RAM and 120gb SSD. All running well.

Since installing HA, I have now got a Synology 923+ NAS.

Does anyone think there is any benefit in moving HA to the NAS off the Pi?

I’ve moved HA from an ancient 512MB Banana Pi M1 to a Docker container on my DS220+. That was much quicker for me, but I doubt you’ll see much difference coming from the RPi4.

My Banana Pi now runs as a Spotify Connect device and backup Pihole instance.

The answer is more about. What’s connected to your pi (coordinator sticks etc)

By far the biggest question I see from folks running inside proxmox or something similar is. How do I connect YYY stick or help my stick is suddenly not connected to *** integration because now you’re dealing with USB pass through and delivering that into your virtual machine running HA. So those issues require different solutions than your Pi (which the two biggest issues for pi are under voltage and SD failure)

Which issues do you prefer to tackle?

Hopefully under voltage is sorted as I have an uprated power supply connected and SD failure is sorted as I am running off an SSD.

At the moment I don’t have too much connected to the Pi (early days), so unless that was a real benefit in moving I think I will remain as is (for now :grinning:)

Pi undervolt is Always an issue because it doesn’t matter what ps you use, Usb can only draw 5v 3a Max because limits of standard usb.

Unless your pi is using USB Pd. (hint, it’s not, I’m not sure if they added it to the 5) Undervolt is always an issue plan for it.

Ah - always learning :). Will watch out for it thanks.

The best way to combat power problems on Pi is to move as much as possible to an external powered usb hub.

Which of course has its own issues… But yeah you get the point. It’s really a matter of which issues are more interesting or easier or whatever for you to fix.

Enjoy!

Hi Nathan,
I have a Synolgy DS223 with HA. I have smart plugs and some other devices. I am looking to add
smart sensors (assume Zigbee) and intergation with Sungrow invertor/meter (as the invertor does not have a smart meter).
Reading other posts, it seems that Zigbee dongle/USB set up for Synology can be interesting and some have suggested run HA in VMM and USB passthru.
Hence, was thinking about a Pi for HA .
Still learning all about the setups.
What are your thoughts.
Are there options for Zigbee hub with wifi to the router/NAS
Cheers and thanks James
