I’m using Ecolink Zwave motion sensors, which are PIR-based. I have been using one in the office for years to activate some lights and it always worked as expected.
Last week it started reporting false positives constantly - I thought it was hardware failure so I moved another identical sensor into the same room, and it also started reporting false positives. Thoroughly, confused, I moved both into a different room and now they’re back to normal. So something in the office, which 90% of the time has the door closed and no one in there, has started triggering the motion sensor as of last week.
To be clear, nothing in the office moves at all. So do I have a ghost in there or is there something else that could be causing a PIR sensor to detect motion when there is none?
The alternating green/red is when it is in the office; the solid red “off” is while in the other room.
I had one PIR that gets dappled light caused by tree outside that triggers occasionally. Ended up moving it to the other side of the room. Seems to have fixed it.
I’d considered the same, but the sensor is pointed perfectly away from the window. Then I considered shadows… But this happens all night long as well in complete darkness. I am stumped!
There is an LCD monitor directly behind the sensor out of its field of view (the sensor is sitting on the desk so as to readily recognize when I’m sitting there)
It’s plugged in and turned on, but is generally sleeping if I’m not in the room. The sensor gives false positives even when I’m away.
Was the issue with LCD screens due to light from the screens or some other form of interference that might occur even when sleeping? I’ll try turning the monitor off and see what happens overnight tonight.
