Please help with restoring a backup

I have had a major failure and I can’t seem to get my backup running. I’m using the Google Drive backup addon and I have two full backups, but it turns out one (with 2023.5.1) is corrupted and the older one is a 2023.5 beta 3. I am unable to restore the beta snapshot. It just hangs indefinitely (6+ hours).

It’s a Rpi4, using HAOS. I do have connected a display but it’s blank. Observer says green “healthy” and “supported”. I have had full backups restored many times in the past, but this time it just blinks indefinitely. I just want the config (devices, config.yaml, lovelace), I can reinstall addons very easily and I don’t care about the history db at all.

tl;dr can I somehow manually restore my backup?

Please advise. It’s four years of setup potentially lost. Thanks.

You could try unpacking the .tar file created by the backup using a zip/unzip tool.

I’ve just had a go. The backup file included a folder called homeassistant, which included a folder called data, which contained all the folders and files you would normally see using file editor in HA. You should certainly be able to reconstruct all your .yaml from that - not sure about the rest, but better than nothing.

Good luck!

I can save the yamls like this, but where are the devices amd services stored? And what in the backups contains the configuration itself? It’s not the folders or add-ons, so I guess it’s the topmost item (Home assistant xxxx.x.x)?

Thanks!

If I were you I’d start from scratch again with a fresh install, add all the integrations and add-ons I had before, then reconstruct the config using material rescued from the backup. A big job, but in my experience most of the work goes into the yaml anyway, so you should be halfway there. You’ll probably end up with a leaner, meaner system. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
