For me, all protocols including Wifi, Bluetooth, Zigbee lack the ability to determine the distance to the device. Like GPS but within an apartment. If this were the case, then robotic vacuum cleaners would navigate faster. And for many devices it was possible to create a 3D model of an apartment automatically. When entering a corridor with a smart watch, individual lighting would automatically turn on. You could also use your phone to control the room you are without room selection on smartphone. And then all these crutches with people recognition and presence sensors will become a thing of the past. I believe that it is now possible to achieve accuracy up to a meter. Because satellites provide enormous accuracy regarding their distances. It’s more likely that no one took up this task.
You should look into ESPresense for presence detection. Uses bluetooth to do exactly what you are asking.
Else wise the next best thing is presence sensors. That’s legitimately what they are for.

Some enterprise-grade WIFI solutions have the option to track wifi clients and other assets (e.g. bluetooth trackers etc) directly.
I don’t think there is a Mist integration in HA though, so that would need to be added as well…
