My wife and I just got iPhones and I discovered the dedicated app last night. It seems to report location much better then I ever could with Owntracks and Android. When at home, if I go to the map icon at the bottom, it will show push pins for mine and my wife’s location as well as dotted circles for the zones I have setup. Everything seems to work fine.
However if I am outside my network and go to the same place on the app, it will only show my location with a blue dot instead of a push pin nd my wife doesn’t show up at all. Also the zones I have set up don’t show. If I VPN into my network, they do.
This leads me to believe there is a port that part of the app is wanting to use that I need to open on my router in addition to what I already have setup for Home Assistant. Would anyone know what that port is?
I’ve run into this issue before with the app. The only port the app uses is whatever port you setup in HA (default 8123). How did you point the app to your HA install? Did you use the internal network IP for the device running HA, or do you have a dynamicDNS name setup with port forwarding or some other kind of external access to HA outside of your network?
When not connected to your home network, go into the settings for the app and check the status of the 3 components if they are checkmarks or x’s. Also go into the location tracking section of the settings and see if your zones show up there. If they do not show up, or the components in the settings show an “x”, click on the save button just under the URL for your HA install and try again. That’s what I have had to do to get the zones to show up again. It seems to happen every few days or so for me.
