I have several Ring spotlight cams in my back yard for security, their spot light turns on via motion at night. This is great but when I am hanging in my back yard I dont want to be blasted with security spot lights. I want to set it so i can set a scene that enables my ambiance lighting in the patio and disable the motion activation of the lights. This is possible via the Ring app so would that mean its somehow possible via the Ring integration? So far I havent found any ability to control parameters, only toggle the lights, etc.
The only way I can think of doing this and I’d rather not go this route is to buy stand alone motion sensors and mount them outside and then have them trigger the ring lights via home assistant automations. I much rather have it so I can disable motion light via an automation and not have to buy and mount MORE battery powered sensors…
unfortunately no, i am switching to the new nest spotlight hoping it can do what i need. makes it impossible to set scenes without the ability, really annoying!
Its not a perfect solution, but what I did was to disable the default motion activation of lights in the ring app and take over the process via automations. With the ring-mqtt addon you get entities for the motion detection and for the light so I wrote my own automations (in node red, but should work fine in the base automation system in HA) to do it based on my own schedules. The place where it isn’t as good is the ring system takes about 5 seconds to report motion to HA so there is a long delay, but it gives me control over when the floodlights will activate with motion. I feel the tradeoff is worth it. I don’t know if it would be possible to get the ring-mqtt addon to be able to enable or disable the automatic motion detection from HA (this would be the perfect option as it would remove that delay).
I had thought about doing it this way but my concern was the issue you mentioned, the delay. Also, I wonder if the motion is detected using the IR motion sensors or from analyzing the video for movement in the ring mqtt motion entity? That would be a big difference as well, I would assume its the IR sensor but I know some systems have 2 ways of detecfting motion (like my new nest one) it uses both the video and the sensor.
I’m not sure about video vs. motion sensor detection, but it seems to still detect even out of the motion zones I’ve set for video so I suspect it is more the motion sensor specifically.
