Possible to use SD card as main disk instead of emmc for Home Assistant Green?

If the emmc in Home Assistant Green wears out or fails for another reason, is it possible to run Home Assistant on an SD card (high endurance) plugged in to the device instead?

Also I wonder how long I can expect the emmc in the device to last for a Home Assistant installation that mostly uses sensors, lights and switches?

I am new to Home Assistant and started playing with an old laptop first and bought a Home Assistant Green this week. It wasn’t until then I found out that the emmc in the device could wear out much sooner (a few years maybe) than I thought.

I had planned to buy one more Home Assistant Green soon to put one at home and one in the summer house but if it will only last for a few years until the emmc fails and it is not possible to fix that by running on an SD card instead I should probably buy some other device than Home Assistant Green.

Hi roberga,

Sure. The EMMC should last 2-3 years, the SD card a few months.

Maybe an external SSD plugged into a powered USB hub would be the suggested way to go, though…

UPDATE: (I did more reading and not sure you can use the SD card for that, it talks about emergency recovery only or something,…

They really should have a sata or m2 slot on the board as an alternative internal means as you can get small m.2 drives for cheap for these uses.

So no problem to change main disk to an SD card on this device? Good.

From what I have read, a standard SD card can die after a few months use as you write. But there are ones that should be comparable to SSDs when it comes to endurance, eg. SanDisk MAX ENDURANCE microSD that is marketed as “Built to capture up to 120,000 hours (over 13 years) of footage for your home security cameras or dash cam”. I don’t think I will come close to that over many years with my Home Assistant usage. Is that endurance just a scam and they will fail just as early as any other SD card?

Home Assistant Yellow already offers this but it is much more expensive than Green.
I am not really after the big capacity an SSD can offer, only that my device doesn’t turn into a brick because the emmc has worn out in a few years with no way to fix it with a new disk.

I am considering getting a Raspberry Pi 5 and use a M.2 SSD on that setup for my second Home Assistant device instead of one more Home Assistant Green though.

For when you get the pi with the hat here is a cheap m.2 to look into:
