Possible to use two z wave z-sticks?

Hi folks,

I live in Australia and purchased a z-stick and flood monitor in the US (was half the price of buying it here) to use with home assistant on my raspberry PI. I just spent a few hundred dollars in australia on more z wave gear and after 20 minutes of trying to set it up realised that different countries have different frequencies for z wave (doh!).

Anyway the best option is to just buy another z-wave stick with that aussie frequencies and use it alongside my current setup. Does anyone know if it’s possible to run two z-sticks on the one raspberry pi running home assistant?

Cheers

@matust

This doesn’t answer your question but you could use a vera along side the stick.

Thanks for the tip, I’ll have look into the Vera. Worst case I guess I’ll get another pi and run the us z stick and flood detector seperately.

You can do that and use API calls to bring it into your main ha instance.

Sorry if I’m reviving an old thread.

I also live in Australia, bought a Smartthings Hub in the US and some Z-Wave gear here to realize that they don’t work with each other.

I think you can get another Pi, install HASS, plug in an Australian stick and run it as a slave instance.

PS The US Z-Wave frequency is illegal in Australia, not much of a big deal but the authorities might do something if they find out.

Frustrating that they use different frequencies, especially since home automation things are so much cheaper in the states. I ended up cutting my losses and brought an Aussie z-stick and water sensor

Well, buying a new Z-Stick and water sensor is still cheaper than a Vera. Did you buy the Aeotec or Fibaro? I like how the Fibaro looks.

Unlike ZigBee which uses 2.4GHz and is universal worldwide, Z-Wave is around the 800-950MHz range, which is also used by mobile phone carriers, and obviously mobile phones use different bands in different places, and Z-Wave can’t interfere with them, so different Z-Wave frequencies are used in different regions.

A good thing to do is, like mobile phones, they support all bands initially but choose a band based on location. But this is certainly going to increase the costs with no obvious benefits to most people.

By the way, did you try having two Z-Wave sticks plugged in?

Yeah I did. I got an error in the log file from it.

Hi, has anyone here tried using 2 Pis with 2 different z wave sticks? How does it work? Care to shed some light?

No, it doesn’t work.
