Presence forced by WiFi, but incorrect

Can someone point me in the right direction? I have the app on my phone and looking at my logs on my HA, it’s aware I came home because it sets presence to 1. However my phone naturally drops WiFi as soon as the screen is locked, and pops back on to grab data every now and then (normal behaviour) and each time it drops off, and back on, HA reports it as away, then home. This is clearly nonsense, and I’d rather it just used occasional GPS pings, or SSID scans. Any idea why it’s doing this?

Have you tried what is suggested in the Troubleshooting page of the Companion App docs?

I’m trying to identify the problem before I can find a solution, I assumed it was a WiFi connection issue (and the troubleshooting solution doesn’t really help, because it suggests using VPN which isn’t an option to force on all devices, and we are repeatedly told not to open HA up to the public without). Here, while at work (10 miles from home) I get constant “home” and “away” transitions. I’m not sure what’s driving it, because clearly I’m not home, but I am logged in via both the companion app and over VPN via the web/desktop). It isn’t logical to assume location based on log-in, it should only come from a selected tracking device, but I’m not even sure if that’s how it works or if I’m just making assumptions.
