Problems getting frontend development environment set up on OpenSuse

If I use node.js 10.10.0, I get a core dump. If I use 8.12.0, I get the same thing this person gets:

I*ve set up both backend and frontend development environment according to the documentation. where it gets to the onboarding module and then just hangs.

Anyone have any suggestions. Do I need to be using a different version of node.js?
