Proximity automation trigger not working

Wondering if anyone has dealt with this. I want my porch lights to turn on either at sunset when we are already home, or when we approach home (less than 3 miles away). The part about turning on if we are already home is working great. I can’t seem to get the proximity part to actually work tho.

I was getting some errors in the log before using the | float pipe, so that’s why those are there. But that didn’t seem to actually help. I can’t find any examples of people with automations similar to this, so any help would be great!

Here is a link to my automation, with the row highlighted:

Did you ever get this working? I’m also trying to get something similar working but so far no go…

@Tyfoon unfortunately I never did. Let me know if you make/made any progress tho! Right now my automations are just running when I actually arrive home, which works about 95% of the time.

Well, I have it working but stumbled on another issue:

@mikey7047 What device tracker platform are you using? Have you tried increasing the value for the proximity and seeing if that works? In my experience with Owntracks, the proximity doesn’t change all that frequently, so if it’s not sending a new value between 3 and 0, your not going to get the automation to fire until you arrive home.

@brg468 I am only using owntracks right now and I think you might be correct. I noticed the other day that my lights on my porch did turn on while I was approaching home, but 99.9% of the time they don’t turn on until I am AT home. I am thinking it’s just based on the frequency of Owntracks updating. So the automation above is probably correct, but the frequency of Owntracks is going to prevent this from being a viable solution.

I am considering placing an RFID tag in my car that I will tap my phone onto when I would like the automation to run, this would be more reliable anyways.

The platform gpslogger is more efficient, i use it, and changing the position each one minute, very stable. try it.
i used it on my android.

You could try making multiple regions in Owntracks with various radii for the triggers your looking for. When you enter/leave a region, it’s supposed to trigger a location update. It won’t be perfect but it might help give more frequent updates.
