Proximity sensor for waking screen

I’m working on a little project where I’ll have HA Lovelace, Apple Music, and Security Spy all running full screen on a touch screen monitor from a Mac mini.

I’d like the screen to wake up when someone walks up to it. I was playing around today with scripts to wake the screen from an Aqara motion sensor and it’s far to good at detecting motion. Are there any proximity sensors that have adjustable sensitivity? Or thoughts on a better way to achieve the same goal.

looking into this. Might give me an excuse to get a 3D-printer which could definitely be fun. Thank you.

Do it. I got mine primarily for building the boxes for my central heating controller, and it’s been refreshing not to have to search for the least compromised project box — just fire up OpenSCAD and design something bespoke with support pins for ESP modules, pre-drilled holes (or at least correctly-positioned pilot holes) etc etc.

I have also printed coffee capsule holders, a Stevenson shield for my outdoor temperature sensor, lamp shades for the kitchen bulbs and all sorts of bits and pieces around the house. I needed a corner piece to finish a shower plinth and have never found anything suitable: designed and printed that in a couple of hours.

I started looking around. Prices are all over the map. How do you have to spend to have a tool instead of a toy?

I guess it depends on your definitions and requirements. Mine will print PLA and ABS within an 8" cube, which is all I need. I did a bit of research, read some reviews and watched some videos and chose one.

Filament printers are pretty basic in concept: the bed moves in one dimension, the head in the other two dimensions. It’s all down to build quality and size until you start going more advanced with multiple heads etc.
