Proxmox and snapshots vs backups

I’ve just received a NUC and as I have never used Proxmox, I decided to go that way and use the whiskerz007 script. I keep hearing how good proxmox is so thought I’d give it a spin. I’m just getting to grips with it and learning, I’ve got Home Assistant set up and working and I do like Proxmox so far!

But what is the difference between snapshots and backups and which one should I be doing? For example if my Hassio VM goes belly up and I need to nuke the VM and start again what is the correct way to restore the Hassio VM?

Leading on from that question, do I still need to take internal Hassio snapshots if I am taking snapshots/backups of the whole VM in Proxmox?

I suggest using the backup feature of Proxmox and configure it to do it automatically. With thiw backup you get a complete backup of the VM meaning you restore the backup and you are exactly were you left it at the time of the backup, nothing to reconfigure etc. With a HA snaoshot, dou still need to reinstall HA, then load the snapshot and maybe need to reconfigure some small things.

Thanks for clarifying about the Hassio snapshot.

In Proxmox should i do a snapshot or a backup, I see options for both and not sure what the difference is and which I should be using.

I believe backups are copies of the HD of the machine while snapshots are copies of the current state of the machine.

Being practical, the first means that you have a copy of your machine in off state. Snapshot will have a copy with your machine on and the state it had (software running, memory and all this things)

I hope I’m not too wrong and clarifies a little the difference.

I was also wondering of the difference between Proxmox backups and snapshots. Snapshots create very small file sizes so I don’t think that it can be a full backup.
Also, does HA have to be stopped before running the Proxmox backup? I suspect the answer is yes.
thanks

Personally I make daily backups at 3 AM in snapshot mode, works fine for me, takes about 10 mins for the backup with size approx 25GB to an external NAS.

Thanks for the links. I see that the default setting for Backups is in Snapshot mode and that is what I have being doing, so I think that I am good.
thanks

Do you use a script for the back up.
Is it in HA or on the server.
I have tried to follow the wiki that you linked but just can not get it to work to send the data to my NAS, or even my Nextcloud server.
Can you please shed more light on how you did it.
Thank you

I added the NAS through NFS to Proxmox storage and then configured the backup in Proxmox.

Here’s a screenshot from the backup settings, hope you can read it, took the screenshot with the phone.

I also send a mail to my healthcheck.io mail address, and then use a sensor to get the data into Home Assistant. This way I see the time when the last successful backup has been made and I have an automation that notifies me if the last backup failed/was more than 24 hours ago.

Im really interested in the “healthcheck.io” service, unfortunately it dont seem to work anymore.

Is there any similar services out there that is free which I can use to monitor my backups and get into Home Assistant?
