Question about buying IoT for HAOS

Not sure exactly where this fits since it’s kinda a meta question – but as someone who’s new to Home Assistant, I’m finding that the random IoT items I have don’t REALLY integrate well. They may technically have integrations or they may not at all, but it seems to be a far cry from what they’d ideally be capable of. Is there a community list of things that are known to integrate well? I’ve seen random bloggers and such have a few items (or even more) but I’d like a more comprehensive list that’s easier than trying to look up the item every time.

What do you experts look for when buying IoT devices?

For example, Eufy has a Home Assistant Integration (two actually, and they both seem messy) but when I run it I get a 500 from their servers (I assume they’ve updated their API but the command is out of date?). The iRobot integration can’t get the password from the robot (automatically or manually). One of my two Wiz lights work because, presumably, reasons? I can go on.

I’m sure the answer is that these are all garbage because they are too cloud based; fine, great, I don’t disagree. But what should I look for in the future – and more importantly, where should I look?
